At P.S. 217, students receive a progressive music education experience that encourages exploration, collaboration, and the development of a life long love of music.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students learn about the building blocks of music through games, movement, and singing.  Fundamental concepts such as tempo, pitch, timbre, and rhythm are explored as well as solidifying a repertoire of age appropriate songs.

November 2019 – Kindergarten students are learning about loud (forte) and quiet (piano) in music using fun activities and songs!

First Grade & Second Grade

First and Second graders are following Carnegie Halls’ Musical Explorers curriculum that introduces music from around the world performed by amazing musicians that live right here in New York City!

What’s happening in First and Second grade now!

November 2019 – First and second graders are learning Armenian folk songs and dances introduced by a group of singers called Zulal.

Third Grade

In third grade, students work on learning to play the recorder.  The parent’s association at P.S. 217 purchases recorders for all third grade students so at the end of the year, students will be able to bring the recorder home.  Students use their knowledge of writing music to compose short pieces for recorder and work on playing in an ensembles with singing, percussion, and recorder parts.

What’s happening in Third grade now!

November 2019 – Third graders are working on learning Low D and Low F# to play the first song from the Suzuki Recorder book called “One Bird”. Students are using peer-to-peer feedback to improve their playing.

Fourth Grade & Fifth Grade

Students in fourth grade and fifth grade are working on creating group composition projects that help them to discover the fun of making music with friends and expressing themselves through music.

What’s happening in Fourth and Fifth grade now!

November 2019 – Most fourth and fifth grade classes are working on a story soundtrack composition in which groups work together to compose music that tells a story using voice, xylophone and percussion instruments. Students are completing a written score for their work and will perform for the class.
